Summer, Happy Time: An Innovative Retail Experience by MOMOT

Transforming Shopping Malls into Interactive, Seasonal Storyscapes

In a unique collaboration with illustrator Sin-young Kim, design team MOMOT has transformed the Lotte World Mall into an immersive, seasonal storyscape. This innovative retail design, titled 'Summer, Happy Time', is a testament to the power of design in enhancing customer experiences.

What sets 'Summer, Happy Time' apart from other retail designs is its focus on creating an interactive, fairytale-like world for customers. The design team at MOMOT has crafted four unique stories, each connected to a different season, to engage customers in a novel way. The aim was to turn the large complex shopping mall into a space where customers could experience these stories, rather than just shop.

The design was realized using a variety of materials and techniques. The structure was primarily made from plywood, with color and texture added through painting and printing. Three-dimensional characters were created using FRP material, and spaces for customers to rest were adorned with fur and artificial flowers. Large dolphins, made from balloons and silicon material, were also included for children to interact with, thereby appealing to customers' five senses.

The design was implemented across various spaces in the mall, including a photo zone, several show windows, and a super graphic. The photo zone was designed as a space for customers, particularly those with children, to rest and experience the stories. The show windows, strategically placed along customers' shopping routes, were separated according to scenes. Graphic banners were also used to unfold the story behind each scene.

The project, which started in June 2018 and ended in August, was a significant challenge for the design team. They had to transform various spaces in the mall into interactive areas for customers and children, all under the theme 'Summer Happy Time'. The aim was to make customers feel delighted in every space they visited, turning the mall into a complex cultural space for the whole family, rather than just a shopping center.

The design's success is reflected in its accolades. 'Summer, Happy Time' was awarded Silver in the A' Event and Happening Design Award in 2019. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The design was praised for its strong technical characteristics, artistic skill, and ability to evoke positive feelings, amazement, and wonder in customers.
